Recently I’ve been doing a lot of research on honing my writing skills. I’ve bought several books, subscribed to some great blogs, and I’ve even signed up for an online class. Now, I’ve taken classes on English and Grammar before, you know, back in the day when I was just a young thing in college. But, well, it was back in the day so I’m pretty sure there was a slight depreciation of knowledge since then. Thus the need for the books and research. But this online course is something different.

It’s all about building an author platform, which nowadays is very important tool for authors to have. Especially if those authors want to catch the eye of an agent or publisher. And that of course is something I would love to do. Not to mention the instructor is Kristin Lamb, who I absolutely adore. I’ve learned so much from her blogs already that I knew this would be a great opportunity to glean even more good stuff from her. So when I saw the price was definitely in my budget range, I was hooked. Well, almost.

I was still a little hesitant. I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t have my doubts right? I mean, I don’t have a complete book to sell, heck I’m still trying to push through the first draft. And lets not even get me started about my blogging. I have such a hard time trying to figure out what to blog about that I get stuck in the finding content part and forget to even blog at all. I felt like maybe it was too early to build a platform. Why should I when I’m not technically an author yet?

Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who had doubts and several people commented to Kristin on this very topic. Her answer: it’s never too early to start building a platform. The purpose behind this class is to help me build an author brand that will grow right along with me. It’s going to show me how to use the social media tools at my disposal to build more readership and help me find the right content for my blogs as it pertains to my author brand.  As a bonus – I get to interact with a bunch of other writers. This means meeting new people and making new friends who share my passion for writing.  Needless to say, I’m totally stoked!

I can’t wait for this course to start. Anything that helps point me in the right direction with my writing career is definitely a positive investment in my opinion. My dream is to be an author. To me, taking this class is one more productive step towards reaching my dreams.
